Analysis Of The Usual Suspects

The opening sequence of the usual suspect enables us to learn about the genre, characterisation and narrative. We first see keeton who we see the most in the opening scene demonstrating the fact that he's the main character and the focal point within the film. Also the sound is used effectively within the subtitles of the film as they start of slow of with a calm sound showing the serious nature of the film straight away. Another connotation of the opening scene is the mystery of the boat which already again insinuates a detective genre due to the fact of the camera panning up on the killer, we never see his face which results of suspension and tension. The sound bridge with the gun shot additionally emphasises the magnitude the noise and how violent his death is and the enigma to the death.

The characters in the opening scene are symbolised in different ways to demonstrate different perspectives for the audience of the suspects. Firstly McManus is the first character introduced after keeton in the first scene being arrested we straight away see that he is not the ring leader due to the atrocious setting of his living standard.

Next we see Hockney, he is presented with a car noise which sounds like a shooting gun which could already demonstrate his violent attitude which could show he is the violent one.

After Hockney we see Del Toro, we see his cool laid back attitude but when the police arrive he walks in other direction emphasising the guilt he faces and knows he's going down. Additionally there is no speaking and only non-diegetic noise due to the fact that Del Toro knows there's no point of arguing and just accepts it.

Further on, Keeton is presented again from the first scene where he is killed showing the flashback by the editing of the film and is shown in a elegant restaurant. Keeton is represented as a upper class character which therefore orchestrates he could be the ring leader or the man 'behind the scenes'. Again keeton doesn't argue back through the acknowledgement of guilt.

Lastly we see verbal klin he is demonstrated as the innocent one with himself narrating saying how he shouldn't be here, what he does is put a placebo on the audience that he is the good guy but in the opening scene the camera pans up on the killer and this happens again when we are introduced to verbal signifying he isn't as innocent as you think.
