Use the 4 technical codes of camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene explain how genre, narrative and characters are represnted in Skyfall
The opening scene of skyfall signifies Bond as a hero due to the fact of that he's presented in a medium close up which demonstrates his serious and calm attitude towards the situation. Also the synchronus sound in the opening scene from the office shows again the nature of the hero due to the fact that he's taking orders what to do and not rushing in panic. Furthermore, the eye line match of bond towards the dying person suggests he is the good guy as he's not ignoring him and tries to help him. In addition, the light from the outside world suggests is shone on Bond's face emphasises that he is a good guy as the dark room could illustarte otherwise demonstarting the binary opposition of the scene. Therefore, we see in the opening scene of Skyfall the genre is straight away action thriller due to the blood, gun and tense music.
Further on in the opening scene the camera tracks Bond getting into the car when he leaves the dark room. Also when he is in the car the hand held camera is in place to show the tension of his facial expression and that their is a mission he must conquer. Additionally, the non-digetic sound of middle eastern shifts when Bond gets in the car to non-digetic chase music this again makes the scene more tense and puts the audience on edge like any great action film does. Moreover, there's binary opposition again used in this scene when bond is in the car and in the dusty location with rapid music it suddenly switches to the calm office which signifies the chaotic nature of his missions and how hard it really is. The binary opposition is so effective in this scene due to cross cutting where it shows two scenes happening at the same time in different locations again used to emphasise a strong genre. The car scene really demonstrates and sets off what the narrative of the film will be like in a very clever way.
The ending of the opening scene really creates a huge amount of action where we first see the quick cuts, where they first get into the car to when it crashes there were about 45 quick cuts this is purposely done to make the audience tangible to the situation where the cuts make the scene more rapid which makes the audience more tense and nervous to see what happens. In addition, when Bond gets out of the car it shows him in a wide shot with a gun held up not only does this show that he is vulnerable like all the surveillants but also it gives him a sense of power that he can complete his mission. The location and the busy nature of the location really makes the gun fight and the car chase more dramatic, chaotic and realistic. Lastly, the non-diegetic sound arises again when the car chase is taken place which adds tension, anxiety and suspense.
In conclusion, the mise en scene, sound, editing and camera all add up in the opening scene and act on one thing which is to make the scene as captivating and thrilling as possible. These 4 main components do this and therefore the film is so successful and popular as the genre and narrative are clear the whole way through the film.
