REFLECTION
REFLECTION
In the AS film sequence 'Reflection' the four technical codes of: mise-en-scene, camera techniques; editing techniques and sound techniques allows us to make connotations on the sequence.Firstly, as we are introduced to the scene, we see a man who claims to be a police officer. These connotations are portrayed through the use of mise-en-scene such as the shirt and tie, trench coat and the police badge.
Also, the diegetic dialogue within the shot-reverse-shot editing technique of conversation says, "I'm PC Dixon", which informs us that he is a police officer who is 'investigating'. We then see a close-up of the males face as he shuts the door behind him. This exposes us to the dull facial expressions from which we can infer that he's a serious/dark character. Moreover, as the scene transitions to inside the house, the non-diegetic, synchronous sound is supposed to indicate the male's unpleasant side. The connotation of isolation comes from the diegetic sounds of birds and nature outside. As the 'killer' closes the door we see the camera technique of tilting down to show that he has locked the door and stolen the key, which adds to the mischief of the detective and raises questions about his authenticity as a police constable. As he locks the door we hear a synchronous increase in sound to accentuate that there is no escape. Additionally, we can connote that he isn't just a standard police officer but is hoping for something more from this "intrusion". Because of this, the officer's profile gets darker as the sequence progresses. We catch further close-ups of these black leather gloves as he scavenges around the house which symbolises he is of a stalker type and is extremely creepy. The slow non-diegetic sound helps to build tension throughout the sequence as the killer stalks around the kitchen. We can tell that something is not right. Finally, the use of eye-line match from the woman catches the police officer intensely searching through her belongings, in the reflection of the mirror.
