Analysis of music video (3)
Britney Spears - Baby one more time
Andrew Goodwin states that a key feature in music videos is when the lyrics match the visual. This is apparent in 'Baby one more time', "show me'" as she places her hands on her chest implying she's referring to herself. Moreover, when she sings "my loneliness is killing me", Spears is displayed to be by alone and miserable. Lastly, the lyrics match the visuals as she sings "I still believe" as the whole video is a dream making this slightly ironic. These examples illustrate a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
Furthermore, there is also a relationship between the music and the visuals. The music is cut to the beat, and the dance was choreographed to fit in with the song. To further amplify this relationship, the flashes of light, cuts between shots and camera zooms all match the beat of the music.
The demands of the record label are met due to the involvement of plentiful close ups throughout the music video. She's the only singer in this song thus there is a lot of camera time focused on her to depict her as the star.
There is frequently references to the notion of looking and particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body in music videos as stated by Andrew Goodwin. However, in this music video, Goodwins theory isn't necessarily matched. There is no voyeurism that can be strongly identified, however her clothing could suggest otherwise as it could be seen as sexualising as her stomach is exposed. When Britney is singing she looks directly into the camera appearing as if she is singing to who is watching her.
Additionally, during this music video a dance routine is included throughout which is the only performance element involved, also signifying this song is of a pop genre.
