Star Image/Theory- Richard Dyer

- Richard Dyer is a births media theorist, who discussed a star's special place in the audiences lives
- He suggests that a stars's image impacts on the consumption by the audience
- He argued that the star image is manufactured and artificial and that individual stars have their own USP in order to grab and hold our attention e.g Rihanna's delightful figure

A star image relies on the following:

1) Rebelliousness- Snoop Dog

2) Youthfulness- Bieber
3) Anti-Authoritarian- Gaga
4) Sexuality- Rhianna
5) Passion- Kanye
6) Being Artistic- Jay Z
7) Difference- Miley Cyrus
8) Talent- Drake
9) Confidence - Beyonce
10) Style- Bryson Tiller

For a star to maintain their celebrity status and target audience they need to constantly reinvent themselves as there audience grows up and grows older for example Miley cyrus :

  • Started of as a synthetic pop star working for Disney
  • Had a star image of being clean cut and wholesome
  • As Miley grew up and her audience changed she attempted to reinvent and mature her self e.g Party in the USA
  • She started to act more rebellious and anti-authoritarian around the time of 'wrecking ball' and used her sexuality to appeal to a certain audience thus helped her rebrand her image e.g 'twerking' 2013

  • Since this point she has also tried go show herself as more rebellious by working herself with Flaming Lips and announcing she is bi-sexual
  • Ultimately, Miley Cyrus has played with her image in order to widen and change her target audience and also to rebel against the social standards
