Different Styles of Music Videos
Performance Based - A performance based video shows the artist/band/group performance throughout the song and sometimes can play throughout the whole video. It often includes a lot of close-ups as well as the artist adopting a particular visual style to match the song. As well as this, can appear to perform in an unusual place, such as on a mountain where all lyrics are lip-synced.
The Strokes - Reptillia : Each shot squares off a single body part; The Strokes were always about image, and here the video fetishises their bodies and clothes accordingly.

Narrative Driven - Often the video tells a story that either features in the lyrics or is suggested in the lyrics. This narrative can be like a condensed film with a beginning, middle and end. As music videos are often short, the narrative videos are usually fast-paced, with a quick succession of cuts, including various shots. Sometimes the story can contradict what is seen for effect and the artist could be a part of the story or an observer.
J Cole - She Knows : We can see from this music video that two teenagers bunk off school and get more than they bargain for as they get in trouble. As the video progresses, we come to realise the everyday secrets that exist in families, particularly between parents and their children. The 5 minute short video is able to tell us this story through the montage of clips.

Abstract - These are also known as concept videos which are based around a single idea that it obscure, even surreal for an audience. The unusual content is an attraction for many consumers which draws them in. A successful abstract video will keep an audience entertained throughout the duration of it. They can include any unusual aspects.
Justin Bieber - Where Are U Now : This music video is extremely abnormal as it includes a montage of various abstract pieces of art throughout the song which lacks capability of revealing any narrative. So I think this music video has done a good job as it is able to attract a vast number of viewers in comparison to his other music videos. It even left me baffled as to what was going on.
