Analysis Of Music Videos Similar To Ours - 'Da Funk'- Daft Punk
The opening shot of the music video 'Da Funk' by Daft Punk depicts a wide shot, time-lapse of the city moving by quickly. This is almost identical to our initial opening scene, it is used in order to grab the attention of an audience revealing our music video is set in a busy city centre, suggesting an exciting video is beginning. It is made clear that in the video, the protagonist is disabled, shown via the cast on their leg, holding a crutch. Likewise, in our music video the protagonist will be disabled, although not physically, but mentally, a recent moral panic in today's society. This may not seem apparent at first, but as the video progresses, pieces of the puzzle come together, allowing an audience to make their own inferences. When the interviewer, stops the protagonist on the street, enquiring a few questions, she politely tells him to go away 'You haven't been a resident long enough'. This could be because due the appearance, he does not fit in with others so is viewed as a lesser person, thus is opinion is not valued. Similarly, in our music video, we want the actor to be set out from society, from the protagonists' point of view, unwanted and lonely forcing them to isolate themselves with the use of harmful substances such as drugs and alcohol. During the middle portion of the footage, the dog-like actor picks up a book from a local stand headlining 'Big City Nights'. This suggests the actor is looking to have an exciting night out in the city. This is familiar to our idea because, we are planning to give the actor two consecutive big nights out over a Friday and Saturday, in the city heart of London.
Although there is no message to the video, we can break down certain points of the video to identify some form of meaning. It's possible that the man-dog believes he is a normal person, but to others he is an obscure beast, who is made fun of by children, not allowed to participate in a local survey, and id denied entry on the bus. This relates to our initial music video idea because the individual, although not physically different, is mentally unstable, meaning the surrounding population are unable to sympathise, thus creating a feeling of hostility towards the protagonist who finds themselves in a sticky situation.
