Analysis of our actress

Costume is usually one of the most misread and under-appreciated part of filmmaking. For us, our costume choice is a massive factor and a key way of reading the context of our music video. The visual iconography can often speak to an audience, telling the backstory and usually can 'fill in the gaps'.

As we want Lucy to be portrayed as a depressed and alcohol addicted character who has unfortunately faced numerous struggles in such a short period of time of her life. The music video will show a day in the life of the girl and her costume is a crucial part in depicting this montage.

This is because it is out there, quirky, and currently 'on trend' thus being able to identify with a younger audience as a 'cool' individual. As well as this, it can be seen as an item of clothing that isn't so smart and to the every-day person as 'trampy-looking', which is the general idea that we are going for. The size and thickness highlights that in the music video is cold, contributing to the idea of homelessness during the height of winter months, allowing an audience to sympathise with the protagonist.

Working our way down the outfit, we come to the bottom half. In this case, we would like Lucy to be wearing ripped tights. This further adds to the ides of her poverty and homelessness. An audience will be able to make an inference that she is wearing the same clothes and that these are outworn. These look very similar to fishnet stockings which is commonly comparable to prostitution, which is worn as a way of subverting the mainstream idea of 'proper women's clothing' because it was a way of showing flesh in a provocative manner. As a result, we symbolise Lucy as a reckless character who potentially could be 'selling herself' as a way of funding her drug and alcohol addiction, the only safe-haven from society.

Furthermore, as we get to the final part of Lucy's clothing on her feet. These black studded boots is a key component to the whole look we are attempting to achieve. The neutral black colour depicts Lucy as a dark character in a sturdy pairs of shoes demonstrating the inner-strength she acquires to fight the everyday battles of life. The little studs would be a nice touch to the shoes as it represents Lucy as a sharp individual both mentally and physically. Ultimately, these shoes are simple and able to appeal to a wide audience, completing the entire outfit to perfection, enabling an audience to identify her in a way that we as a group feel fit to our initial ideas.

This completes Lucy's outfit that we would like for her to wear on the day. After discussing this with her, she has confirmed that she has these clothes readily available or alternatives will be provided, meaning our costs are massively reduced. On the day she may bring other accessories that she may think could be used to our advantage. To conclude, this outfit is generally appealing to a teenage audience who are into 'hipster' clothing, like of that you'd find in vintage clothing stores of Urban Outfitters.
