Representation of Artist in Terms of Narrative
We have demonstrated her descent into madness and a fractured mental state by sitting on the dirty streets of Shoreditch underneath a bridge, begging for money. This shows her lack of concern for others and their opinions on her. As she is a young teenage girl there are obviously alternatives opposed to sleeping rough, but the fact she chooses to sleep on a cold park bench emphasises her impaired mental state. Additionally, throughout the video she appears to be mentally unstable as she lies in an alley-way crying her eyes out, exampling her descent into an abyss of madness.
As a group, we found various influences on the representation of Lucy as an artist. One of these examples if the renowned singer and songwriter: Amy Winehouse. She died from alcohol poisoning, involving a failure with her respiratory system partly caused by a heavy smoking addiction. As well as this, although not an official artist, the actress in the music video A-Team appeared to be taking various drugs. This is why throughout the video Lucy is seen drinking alcohol and constantly smoking, enhancing the belief that she has no concern for her life and that she is only worried about staying high in her play pretend, in order to numb the pain of reality.
The different choices of location link to her descent. In the opening sequence the audience are made aware of a few of the locations she attends throughout the chaotic day via a montage including the likes of Shoreditch and Piccadilly Circus. To start the day, Lucy is seen waking up on a park bench on a cold winter's morning in London. She appears very cold and lonely as curls up into a ball shivering, looking around. Not long after she wakes up, does she have her early morning drink of vodka in Shoreditch. As she roams around East London, increasingly becoming a drunken state coming down sitting under a bridge with her belongings in a homeless way. After this, she is seen on the floor crying in an alleyway, drinking herself further trying to escape the pain of reality. Her drunkenness is emphasised via the clone shot of her in the park. The final shot of her on the bridge is the last escalation, built up throughout the music video and recent tragedies. We tried to give off the effect of her contemplation of suicide which in today's society is viewed as a very relevant moral panic and is something that our target audience could relate to, being adolescent teenagers of a mature age that face similar struggles to Lucy, thus being able to empathise with her.
We decided to use different shots combined with our editing skills to create different scenarios enforcing emotions on an audience. This includes at the beginning of the video, the time-lapse of Lucy standing in the centre of Piccadilly Circus as she gets further away, this demonstrates that throughout the music video she will be losing her sanity both physically and mentally, descending into an individual she is not usually. In addition to this, our main editor was able to create a clone shot whilst she's in a park doing different things, for example: smoking, drinking and crying.
